👨‍🏫 Professor Tim Boatswain

Professor of Anthropology & History | Higher Education Leader | Executive Education & Senior Leadership Specialist

Professor Tim Boatswain brings extensive international experience in higher education leadership, university governance, executive development and transnational education. He has held senior academic and leadership positions at UK universities — including Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Huddersfield — and has since led international higher education institutions across Singapore, Myanmar and Uzbekistan. At ILEAD he leads the Executive Education & Senior Leadership Development practice, supporting university leaders and governing bodies through periods of complex institutional change.

A Professor of Anthropology and History, he holds a first-class degree in Ancient History and Archaeology, specialising in Byzantium, and pursued postgraduate studies in Social Anthropology at the London School of Economics. His academic and leadership career spans appointments at the University of Birmingham, the University of North London, the University of Bedfordshire and the University of Huddersfield, where he served as Pro Vice-Chancellor and contributed to senior institutional leadership, strategy and academic development. He has also held visiting lecturer and research fellow positions at Harvard University, the Ashmolean Museum, the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, the University of Southampton, Queen’s University Belfast and the Open University.

Following retirement from full-time UK academic posts, he has continued to contribute to international higher education as Chairman and Visiting Professor of TMC Academy in Singapore — an institution delivering UK university degrees across China, Singapore, Vietnam and Myanmar — and in Chairman roles at British University College, Myanmar, and TMCI, Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

This combination — UK academic and executive leadership alongside hands-on international institutional governance — gives ILEAD a distinctive, globally informed perspective on the challenges facing university leaders today.

Beyond higher education he maintains an active civic role in St Albans, including as President of the St Albans Civic Society and Chairman of Conservation 50, and serves as Chairman of Boatswain Lighting Ltd.

He has founded and led universities from concept to reality — as founding Dean, Vice Chancellor, and Chancellor & CEO of Ittihad University, and President & CEO of Emirates College for Management and Information Technology — and holds Chartered Fellowship of the Chartered Quality Institute (UK). Dr Aftab Dean brings 25 years of experience spanning corporate consultancy and higher education leadership. As Chief Analyst for Britain’s Most Admired Company annual audit, he reshaped how listed companies’ performance and reputation are assessed. As Director of Postgraduate Research he supervised more than 70 doctoral candidates to completion within three years. He now channels this experience into a SaaS leadership-assessment platform and executive training at Knowledge Edge, helping leaders build measurable, evidence-based and lasting impact.

At Knowledge Edge he contributes to leadership development and executive education, bringing together leadership theory, organisational performance, data analytics, sustainability and evidence-based decision-making. His principle is simple: effective leadership should not just improve performance — it should create measurable, sustainable impact.

In industry he has contributed to global consultancy projects on corporate governance, reputation management, innovation and sustainability.
